SSC GD Constable: Written Exam Topics, Physical Test Standards, and the Order to Prepare Them

Every SSC GD Constable aspirant faces the same dilemma in the first week: written first, or physical first? The written exam decides whether you reach the physical stage at all, but the physical test cannot be built in a fortnight after the written result. The honest answer is that GD preparation is two tracks running in parallel, with the written track carrying more hours and the physical track carrying more consistency. Get the order right and neither track starves the other.

The written exam: four subjects, one paper

The written test, a computer based exam, covers four subjects. General intelligence and reasoning brings the pattern families: series, coding, analogies, and spatial and non verbal questions. General knowledge and general awareness covers Indian polity, history, geography, everyday science, and current affairs. Elementary mathematics stays at school level arithmetic: number systems, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, and time and work among its regular families. The fourth subject is English or Hindi, chosen by the candidate, testing basic language comprehension and grammar. None of this needs advanced study. It needs complete coverage of ordinary topics, practised steadily.

The physical tests: efficiency and standards

Candidates who clear the written cut off face the physical efficiency test and the physical standard test. The efficiency test is built around running, with different distances and qualifying times for male and female candidates as set in the official notification for the cycle. The standard test measures height and chest against the prescribed standards, with relaxations for specified categories and regions as the notification lays down. These are qualifying and measurement based stages: you do not top them, you meet them. That is why the exact numbers must always be read from the current official notification rather than memory or hearsay.

The order that works

The common failure modes sit at the extremes: the aspirant who only studies and cannot finish the run, and the aspirant who only trains and never clears the written cut off. Parallel tracks, weighted toward the books, avoid both.

Preparing the written track with ZidPrep

ZidPrep's GD Constable topic set is in production inside its 11 exam, 1,808 topic catalog, following the same pattern as its completed libraries, one original study essay per topic in English, Hindi and Bengali. The four written subjects map neatly onto topic wise study: reasoning families one at a time, elementary maths in syllabus order, general knowledge by topic rather than by date, and language in the medium you will actually attempt. ZidPrep also tracks 1,111 real exam notifications with vacancies, dates, fees and eligibility, so your cycle's physical standards and dates come from the record itself. The ZidPrep app launches in December 2026. Books first in hours, body never ignored: that is the whole secret of GD preparation.
